Self-kindness is the key to weight loss says local champion

Weight loss champion, May O’Neill, a member of the Slimming World Shettleston group, says that if people want to lose weight for good they need to learn to be kinder to themselves when things go wrong.

May achieved her four stone weight loss award at group last week and reached the new target she had set herself.

Ann Marie Nairn, Consultant for the group, revealed that a new Slimming World survey of 1,722 slimmers found that almost everyone (98%) who had tried to lose weight in the past had experienced a slip-up where they went off-track in a way that they worried would affect their weight loss journey. After they lapsed, 84% of slimmers automatically criticised themselves, calling themselves ‘weak’, ‘stupid’ or ‘a failure’ – words they would never have used to describe someone else in their position.

May says being a member of a Slimming World group has taught her how to reduce how critical she was of herself when things went wrong. She has instead become more self-reassuring as a result of recognising that she is only human and applauding her self-determination.

Ann Marie says May is such an inspiration and a key member in the group at supporting other members with great advice and easy recipes.
