Tesco Shettleston Extra Community Update October 2021

By Luzier Jeffrey, Community Champion

Well, Summer is a distant memory. The kids are back at school and the nights are fair drawin’ in- as my mum used to say! We raised funds for Carmyle Nursery and Beechwood Nursery in Wellhouse through our bookcase. The money was used to help repair damage caused by mindless vandalism. I fill the bookcase twice a week, and we ask for a minimum donation of 50p per book. We ask that you limit the number of books you take to give everyone a chance.

Buy One to Help a Child was a recent fundraiser in the store. For every purchase of fresh fruit and vegetables made, Tesco made a cash donation to Fareshare or Trussell Trust to help feed children. As part of this initiative, I was delighted to deliver fruit to UTD Sports Summer Camp at Bannerman High School, Budhill Nursery, and Westerhouse Nursery. The children enjoyed some delicious fruit kebabs.

I visited Silverdale Nursery with Kenny and George from Shettleston Growing Project. Clare, a member of staff, is looking to grow some fruit and veg that can be used in the nursery, and that the children can take with them. Clare has already made a fantastic start, and Kenny and George are helping prepare the garden for Winter. I am happy to report my tomatoes are thriving (see- Alan Titchmarsh!) and I have a chilli plant too! I’m looking forward to getting ready for next year and growing more veg. Any tips?
